what exactly is chippy sauce?

hickdive

Cheap brown sauce diluted with 'non-brewed condiment'. The principal objective is disguise the low quality potatoes and fish used in the east by obscuring what you're eating.

Fortunately eastern portions are small enough that you'll have eaten them before you get tired of throwing away bones and green/black chips.

Truly a case of ' the food was terrible...and so little of it'

:)

chippy sauce... bleurgh... it's rancid...

salt and vinegar all the way!!!

in reply to hickdive's comment though.. i have been to a chippie in east calder.. where i think they actually serve whale... their portions are huge!!! mingin, but huge!!!

Probably was whale. I understand the Japanese have lost their taste for it and have a surplus from all their 'scientific' research :)

Chippy Sauce is an 'Abomination Before God!' like black sports mixtures and coffee revels. It's another example of east coast perversion, I've heard it said that they eat mars bars...raw!

A'nster fish bar is a world beater so you can shove you're cheap no-frills... no-chippy sauce right up your DSMB.

I'm with Gogs.... and it's even better when the chip shop sells their own 'brand' of chippy sauce in old Irn-Bru bottles.

Nick

p.s. Who closed the poll?

I lived in Dunfermline for 5 years and I can say with pride that not once did I lower myself to the standards of "sot'n'sauce"

Quoted from a weedgie mate whilst pished
"Don't even THINK about puttin any o' that brown s***e anywhere near ma chips"

Anstruther fish bar is fantastic, used to go once a year when we took our holidays over in Kingsbarns south of St Andrews. Still, none of that brown s***e thank-you very much.

This poll is obviously outdated as where is the chips and cheese option?

And the speciality lumpy curry sauce - beats brown gunk and S&V hands down (in my opinion). Oh, East coast definitely has better chippies - Overton Road in Kirkcaldy has come 4,234,129th place 23 years in a row in the world chip shop of the year contest - now thats quality.

neither East coast or West coast has the best chippies.
they are located in central scotland away from you 'seagull feeders'.
a local Polmont chip shop has won the coveted award of 'best british chippie' around 3 years running i think.
perhaps some of the central guys (see below)
can back me up here as we stand together & say to all the 'easties & westies'.....

T2T has hit the nail on the head! S&V on deep-fried pizza: you can feel the arteries clogging as you dine! And diet Irn Bru is essential: got to look after your health after all & each belch allows you to devour another handful of chips!

Have yet to check out the famed purveyor of deep-fried delights in Polmont I'm ashamed to say.
May just check it out tomorrow night as I'm catering for the kids. Is it easy to find in Polmont: I presume that they have signs outside saying "best chippy in the known universe" etc.? ;)

yes to both....
its on the main street just next to the mini roundabout. not easy for parking, there is a car park behind it.
should be easy to spot with the local neds hanging around outside terrorising old ladies.

do they sell SPAM too? they used too when I was at high school.....

The Chinesse take away used to be very good too "Chicken, green peppers and Yellow bean Sauce," sadly I havent been there since we discovered the delights of the Teng Hang in Grahams Road and their Chicken Satay.

Good stuff. Do you have GPS co-ordinates?

Where's alexmac anyway? We could do with him writing some chip shop guides for the Directory with Lizardland maybe contributing a section on curry houses with acceptable crockery!

Best chip shop where I've lived is in Kelty, where everything was cooked fresh. seemed a bit of a bore at first, but soon saw why. Since I've been in Larbert and now in Edinburgh. All this pre cooked and slowly congealing stuff isn't as good.

Salt n sauce is okay, but prefer plain salt and vinegar.

Not a comment on the west generally. I know the chips in Girvan are fine, but central Glasgow chip shops don't selll chips, they simply seem to sell a mixture of slightly wanmed potatoe mush in partially melted grease!

YOUR ALL WRONG

The bestest chippy, is called Lewis's. It is in Weston on top of that fair isle of Portland. Get there early enough for the best tasting Rock Salmon in the world. The batter melts on your tongue and the meat is divine. Just a pain its over 400 odd miles away and 10 miles to close to my ex wife.

Swiftly followed by the one by the town bridge in weymouth on the town side, one of the few that sell proper crinkle cut chips, and lovely garlic battered mushrooms.

However I will give you curries since eating a curry cooked in Glasgow the ones in my motherland just do not taste as good.

ps, there was no option for just Salt, Pepper and Mayonaise.

Note to all. Check Charlie's recent (prev 24 hr) pickled egg consumption before agreeing to unzip his drysuit after a dive. It may be worth using mask & reg while doing so!
