Are these pictures original or are you using something like Photoshop to improve their clarity?

Also, is there still an intention to meet up for a CA photographic day soon? I was sure 6 October had been mentioned but it turns out I'm diving off the Urchin - forgot all about it! :) Let me know if it's to be a different date.

Hi Dave.
The pics are pretty much original. Used photoshop to remove some backscatter from some of them. Increased the red in the Dogfish pics as these where taken a bit deeper. All pics here between 9-15m.

The Goldsinny, middle Anemone, small fish and star fish have been cropped to improve the composition.

The originals can be found at (warning full size ~3.4MB)

I think that first picture is a Rock cook - there are loads of them at the Slates. A Corkwing wrasse is much brighter, if male, and much browner, if female. It's also a lot bigger.

Your unidentified fish looks like a two-spot goby.

We dived at the Slates Saturday and Sunday. Very nice dives - the vis was really good especially on the Sunday when we dived the smaller pennisula, to the left. Say dogfish, loads of ballan wrasse and female cuckoo wrasse. We also saw a large very very brightly coloured fish - it may have been a male cuckoo wrasse but it was so bright, - oranges and reds and blues. I have never seen such a brightly coloured fish in this country - any ideas?

I've had a scout about the internet and I think it must have been a mature male cuckoo wrasse - really attractive fish.

Yep. I think you're right on the Rock Cook.

Hi regthing,

The quality of your photographs are improving at every posting. You seem to be taking efforts to get right down to the subject. Don’t stop experimenting, keep at it, be daring and get right under the subject if you can for some shots.

Also noticed some big efforts on the composition side of things. Keep at it as it separates artwork from snapshots.

To keep the momentum going forward to the next level technically I would suggest shooting in raw. You are shooting sharp shots but if you want razor sharp shots you will have to deal with the chromatic abouration that practiced eyes will spot in some of your shots. This in simple terms is the soft blue or yellow fringe that is present in the detail in the corners of your shots. This is something we all have to deal with using wider angles lenses underwater. If you had taken the shots in raw there if an easy fix tool in the adobe raw converter.

Looking forward to seeing you master the oly , it’s a formidable tool even if technically it’s a compact.

I think the Corkwing is actually a Rock Cook, the eyes and the lack of dark spot in middle of base of tail and tail shape indicate this .

The UFT (Unidentified Fishy Thing) is probs a Two-spot Goby, Strangely enough with three spots. The female Twospot strangely has only one spot, the male usually two with the second one being under the front dorsal fin. Belly is pale pink or whitish, eyes on top of head and mouth has fairly thick lips. Gobiusculus flavenscens

Hi Olddog. Thanks again for the comments.

I had a few trys shooting in RAW but adobe wouldn't open the files spat out by the camera *.ORF files. I get the error message "Could not complete your request because it is not the right type of document"

So I've been usung the highest resolution JPG. I have the Camedia software that came with the camera somewhere. I'd imagine that this will open them, but probably not a powerful as photoshop.

Hi Scott,

This is a link that will provide an updated Raw reader for your adobe program so you can shoot and edit raw files direct in adobe.

Thanks again olddog. I'm currently using CS2, that update is for CS3. So I'm "upgrading" to CS3 at the moment ;)

I use CS2 and I think that was the upgrade I used for my oly. Follow the instructions to give it a try. They are reversable if you store the old plugin in another file. If it wont work just shift the old file back in.

I didn't even have a Camera Raw plugin for this version! But tried the download and it and it won't work with CS2 :(

Had a look back but I can't find a version for CS2 that covers my camera.

But I should hopefully have CS3 in an hour....

:D :D :D :D :D

I now have CS3 and the RAW editor works. Oh here comes a few late nights.

I had the camera set to output a RAW and JPG image. I opened one of the old RAW pics and the difference between that and the corresponding JPG is amazing
