Well. I broke my Suunto compass on my triple guage set and was looking for a replacement, but full sets were on ebay for £60 and £70

I have had two compasses broken on my triple console by kit being 'badly' placed on the boat:mad: I now have a compass on a retractable line on my bcd.

Are the 3 in line console more prone to getting damaged?

Dose this apply to 2/1 with the compass on the back?

I've got a bit of a dent on my compass frm a miss placed tank. I'm going DIR stylee with a single SPG that will get bolt snapped to my waistband. Wrist mounted compass, depth gauge in comp but a small analogue one from beaver for backup on the wrist.

I wouldnt touch a console with compass on the back if you bought it free for me.

Get a single SPG, Compasses on the back mean you need to rotate the hose and every single one that actually gets regular use will eventually start leajking, bubbling air.

More is not always best.

Even a three inline console is a PITA, too big and bulky.

Single SPG, then get a wrist mount Suunto SK7 on a Bungee mount and as a depth gauge / backup dtimer get an uwatec dive timer.

Just my tuppence worth.

Avoid consoles, you can't hold a compass properly and consistently to navigate with one.

Save pounds, buy the computer/d-timer and compass separately and bungy mount them and clip off the SPG to a d-ring.

Sorry but mines a two inline with compass on the back, 7 years and no problems and if you hold the compass correctly you can read it. It doesn't matter where your compass is if it is not held correctly you will get sh!t readings!!

I think i will reconsider the whole 3 console thing

Thanks for the info.

Only when people don't take care placing kit on the boat:mad:

No, I broke mine all by myself in an empty car park. :(

My 3 in-line is showing signs of wear (compass mounted on a plastic hinge, one leg has snapped). I'm probably just going to snap the compass off and use a hand-held as I've never been convinced of the efficacy or the console-mounted compass.

Does the fact that I have a 15l steel cylinder on my back reduce the accuracy of a magnetic compass? If so, how do I compensate? If not, what hand-held gets the CA thumbs-up?

Worst thing for a compass as far as I can tell is an HID light.
That or a big f**king wreck...

OK It might just be me, but why would an HID light be bad for a compass?

I was wondering that too as they are generally made of delrin which isnt metal or funnyily enough magnetic, unless the current from the umbilical (assuming its an umbilcal torch) comes into play which i cant see myself. Im actually gonna be sad enough to see if mine affects my compass or not. I'll let you know.

my experience is much the same as chris'.

6 years of using an Apex 2/1 without a single bubble & no bother using the compass. On the other hand, I got a Mares Mission single SPG with my pony set. Bubbled after turning gauge on hose during 1st dive: lost half the tank. Replaced with new unit from Deep Blue. Exactly same thing happened to it. Then got them to replace it with a Suunto SPG & no subsequent bother.

It's the quality no the quantity that counts!

I dive regularly with my oms phantom HID and use an SK7 compass, and up until now have not noticed any problems, however now I am curious! Is there any proof that HID's can affect the compass reading or are people just experiencing strange compass readings and just happen to be using an HID at the time and putting 2 and 2 together and making 6? if you know what I mean. I am sure you are all aware there are a lot of underwater features that can cause strange compass readings!;)

I tried my salvo with goodman handle and a stainless steel boltsnap on it, right next to my sk7 and not a bit of interferance. So Davieg is poss talking utter mince which isnt unusual :p

Cylinders can have a bad effect on all your guages, not just your compass;)

My screwdriver (which is probably magnatised) had a huge effect on my compass while I was unscrewing the bloody thing to see what I needed to replace it with!
