I'm pretty sure Conger Alley was named after a diver called Ali Abubakar who fed the congers on a regular basis and he was nicknamed Conger Ali. For a while the site was known as Conger Ali's Reef. I seem to remember he was an artist and had a studio in Maryhill.

So should it be Conger Ali ?

As far as I remember, Ali and others made an artificial reef out of old tyres further north of Conger Alley, some called it Ali's reef, others called it Ardgarten reef.

I heard it was Ali's reef and it somehow changed to conger ali

Yeah - heard that one.

I like the Alley bit because it implies a cool place to hang out. Bit like Viper Alley (if you own a Dodge): http://www.viperalley.com/
