Hey,

Does anyone know of any sites 'near' to Glasgow (i.e. about Loch Long distance away rather than away up as far as Furnace etc.) that are nice for a nite dive?

The usual offenders are Conger, Finnart, and the Caves.

Any more for a wee nite out?

Cheers!

I met a guy in Aquatron yesterday who said that just north of finnart there is a layby with just nuff space for one car. There is a "scramble" down to teh shore, but hte dive is like the caves. i.e. a 30m drop off. Anyone done this?

This sound like it?:

"Craggen
Quite good parking in lay by opposite Loch. Further parking Finnart (http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/jrussell/voyager/LochLong.htm#finart) side of the site on the Loch side. One path goes across the rock outcrop then down to the left, and you may enter here. Usually very clear water, out over the shingle which goes down to 18-20m, if lucky you will find the wall that then drops to ~30m or so.

At the mo i am trying to make a great big word document about all the sites around Loch Long and Fyne! Its Work in Progress!

Hi Urchin

Portencross can be a great night dive and it is not that far away. As for Loch Long, we used to dive at the 'Fishermans Carpark' a bit up from Finnart, just past the small MOD pier. There are drop offs either side with plenty of marine growth. However, It was barricaded a few years ago, but there is a small car park on the right hand side before the site.

What about Five wrecks/Faslane wrecks in Gareloch. Same distance to drive as A Frames at Finnart. Easy shore entry/exit. You only dive to 14m max.

Another dive I havent done for a while is gogerburn at largs. This was a good site for unusual fish. Jack Holroyd loved this because of the small life, mabe the snappers in the club should go for a night dive and see what sort of pics we can get?

I've done the Kintyre from the shore, it's very nice on a summer's evening or even at night.

Or give Elaine at Clyde Diving a call, she sometimes takes the boat out on midweek evenings, or at least she used to. I have had some cracking dives on the Akka at night.

we call that site "Glen Douglas" cos of the road that runs away from it towards loch lomond. Managed to get 45m there. Dunno exactly how deep it goes.

Never manages to get deeper than 32m in Loch Long even at the glen douglas site. which way did you go?

Ding,

Upper Loch Long Chart 3740 (the 1:10 000 chart I scan for the divesites) shows max depth around Glen Douglas Road End at 53m. This is about 200 to 250m straight out from shore.

Max depth around upper loch by Conger Alley 36m

Max depth by Finnart 38/40m

Loch is deepest from Craggen (the walled lochside laybye just north of GDRE) down to just north of Glen Mallon Jetty

Remember Chart Datum is LAT (lowest astronomical tide) so you can reasonably add 2 to 5m onto the above values to give a truer picture of the depths you could encounter.

Had a look at the chart and it does show 53m but I have never been there
Also noticed 120m south of craggan it shows 60m in a clif face close to the shore need to try and find this?

Nice night dives:
The 2 sites at St Catherines.
Trail Island.
Hawks Craig (Little Cumbra).
The steps at the North end of the MOD pier Loch Long.

When u talk about the steps at the North end of the MOD pier Loch Long is this a square area blocked off by crash barriers, if it is we call this site fishermans carpark.

The steps are closer to the MOD pier than the fishermans car park.
The steps go to a mooring bollard.

It's about time someone asked the council to remove the barrier at fishermans car park on the grounds of safety.
Divers park on the opposite side of the road where there is very little room and walk across the road.

But maybe the Fishermans car park is less than 150 m from the MOD pier?
