View Full Version : Warm Collar
Since I now need to get a new neck seal fitted, I was contemplating a warm (neoprenet) collar around this. Recommendations or other comments welcome, it would only be about £15-20 extra, is it worth it?

I like my neoprene collar. They are a lot warmer and I think they are comfier, definately kinder on a shaving rash :D .
They will also take a bit more abuse than a latex one.
Apparently after a while they slacken but I've been told this can be fixed for £15-20 buy cutting out a small slice and stiching it again. But some places will tell you it needs replaced.
as scott says,
surprised they are only £15-£20 extra, you might want to double check that.
fitting them is more a job for a pro as they are stitched, shaped & glued.
neoprene will last for years, while latex could last as little as one dive if you get one of the cheap thin ones & don't talc it.
on the upside, latex are simple to replace/fit yourself & only £10 to buy.
why dont you just get a neopren neck seal
why dont you just get a neopren neck seal
did i read wrong?
a neoprenet is an over seal made of neoprene?
i.e. over a latex seal..
I was gettin gmy latex seal replaced with a latex seal and looking for a neoprene warm collar over the top! Otter can supply and fit for £15 if doing it with a latex replacement?!

Yep, it's a latex neck seal with a neoprene collar that velcros around your neck and provides some warmth - My Northern Diver Cortex suit has one. It certainly keeps my neck warm, but as I've never dived without one, I don't know the difference it makes.

:o i also have one on my suit ...ohh the shame!
ahh, so thats what its called.
yup, slightly warmer, but nothing to write home about.
probably more noticeable in the winter.
there is a diver on this forum (no names), ohh, in fact 2 divers on this forum who wear scarves when diving.
don't you have a cravat chris?
if you are needing a new neck seal id just go straight for a neoprene one. I think i paid in the region of 40 pounds to get one on my last suit. Its alot warmer, more durable and comfortable than a latex one.
GG says the advantage of a neoprene collar is that you can put your hood inside and tighten the velcro tabs and it helps avoid hood flushing.
(just watch you don't get the neoprene collar under the latex seal - as GG discovered, it makes for a very wet dive!)

How the heck do you manage that?

Don't know what he did but there is a picture of him on this website standing around in his underwear during his surface interval trying to dry out

i seen that pic, ohh my eyes, ohh my eyes...
chris,
you could also go for a hood with the long skirted collar attached.
got the waterproof hood with said skirted collar, however it sits up, making me look like Mung the Mercilous :(

Get a DUI FLX 50/50 suit. The zip guard extends up around the neck to tuck in the warm collar hoods :D
get the latex seal and just put up with the cold. You need something to get you going on those early morning dives.
personally I dont like the warm collar things, there was one on the suit I used when under the ice in Russia, and I felt as if it was choking me. It nearly made me sick once.
The decision was made for me, I dropped the suit into EDC and they dont have any warm collars (note they dont do Otter stuff at all). They did have a cone latex neck seal and it is being fitted at the moment.
Thanks for all the input, especially Scott....where can I get a brand new dui 50/50 for the same price as a neck seal :D
