Hi Chaps.
The Kintyre sank on the 18th September 1907. To commemorate the 100th Anniversary Shore SCUBA Supplies of Gourock are thinking of running a day for this on Sunday 16th Sept.

What we're proposing is taxiing folk in the RIB to the wreck from Wemyss Bay beach to the shot line and back. Save the hellish swim out. Looking for maybe £5 a head for the use of the RIB.

Looking to get as many divers as possible there on the day.

Give me an aye if you would be interested. It will be dependant on numbers but I think we might just get enough.

Subject to Mrs H's shifts I'm up for this. I did the Wallachia on the 100th anniversary.

What depth are we talking, if it's all/mostly within 30m I'd be interested (subject to the other half's approval).

Shotline is on the bow which you hit in about 28m. Seabed bit deeper than this. Stern in about 45-48m. If you stick to the bow area you can dive it without going much below 30m.

Doing it off the RIB is much better if you are on air as your looking at a 10-15min swim each way from the shore if I'm not mistaken (never had to swim it myself). Not sure how much more it buys you on Nitrox, a fair bit I would imagine.

Might be scope for two dives depending numbers.

Not a dive for me then, maybe for it's next centenary ;)

I doubt I would be able to make it, but what a fantastic idea - diving on the centenary of the sinking of a wreck.

Not wanting to hijack your thread - I may start something else up - in terms of finding out when other significant dates come up.

A small one for me was that my first dive back after having a slipped disc op in April was 07/07/07 and I was rewarded with seeing a sun-fish on a 30m wreck.

Hmm, thats got me thinking - some research to be done on wrecks :D

Hope it goes well

I'd definitely like to do it. :D

oddly enough, we were discussing this on Sunday in the pub (just after diving the kintyre).
there is also a post on Finstrokes (http://www.finstrokes.com/index.html)with the same idea.
i think it will be like Piccadilly circus that weekend, but i will most likely dive it.

the main stern section runs out around 45m depending on tide, beyond that is the odd scrap of metal which isn't worth risking your life over to see.

Yep.
I posted this on Finstrokes too. Still got SD to go ;)

The tides aren't ideal, LW 0907 HW 1615 and it's just coming off springs.

We'd like to make a bit of a day of it and diving off the RIB will make it a lot easier for most folk.

Scott,

Where do you launch the rib from... Inverkip?

Hi Carlie.
The RIB is berthed in the Kip Marina. Depending on the amount of people who want to use it on this day we plan to pick folk up on Wemyss Bay beach. Plenty of parking and only minutes from the wreck.

I would be nice doing it from a RIB, as Mr. Grumpy-get-off-my-land-your-blocking-my-driveway wont be too chuffed if there are loads of cars about...

I'd be up for that,
I have tried and failed that wreck from
the shore....twice, hopefully I might have my twins rigged up
by then:rolleyes:

:D I grew up in Wemyss Bay. Most of our summers where spent playing all along that beach and that guy is a tw@t :D

there are 2 x 25 liter buoys on the shot (as of last weekend) someone might want to add a third

will there be a rib running on sunday for this ??

not that bothered as wouldn't mind locking horns with the old bugger again
as he does not have a leg to stand on . see this link for more info.

i might even drop the gear at the beach (if rib on)and park up his end :D

I'll check tonight, should still be on. Anyone else up for it? Any preference for what time?

Tides are
LW 0907
HW 1615
and we're just coming off springs. Current can be a problem on this wreck I believe.

We'd probably be looking to hit slack in the afternoon.

What about an evening dive on the actual date ( a week today)?

Must appologise. We won't be able to offer the RIB for the 100th Anniversary dive. It is feeling a bit wheezy at the moment and is at the doctors. :(

So unless someone else can come up with floating transport I'm afraid it is a dive from the shore.

On tip for the shore dive though. Once you get to the rope at the end of the pipe there is enough slack to come up to about 15-20m rather than follow the rope along the bottom (just don't let go of the rope) this should give you a bit more time on the wreck.

Or sometimes when I'm bored/lazy I just take a bearing and follow it up at an angle. As long as you're going up the slope and right then you hit the pipe eventually. I've gone striaght up the slope once or twice too. You only need to find the pipe for navigating your way there, you don't need it on the way back and the transit along the rope is just a waste of extra time at depth. Stick a SMB up in the shallows if you're worried about your surface cover.

Cheers,

Stuart

dont think im going to be able to dive it this weekend
even though its almost within swimming distance from me.

from a safety point of view, if you have never dived this before from the shore & your feeling swooned by the occasion, please dont take any chances.
it can be a big endurance dive & your gas managment should be calculated prior to diving.
the shallowest part is the bow which is in around the 32m mark.
will take around 10-12 minutes to reach it from the shore at a good pace.
currents can be unpredictable & the viz in the clyde can be unkind at times.
be safe.;)
