View Full Version : Eyemouth
Gedan and I have just had a couple of fantastic days diving with Aquastars in Eyemouth. We completed our Nitrox courses over the weekend with two shore dives on Nest Ends Reef and a boat dive this afternoon at the cauldron. Martin Warner was a great guide and knows where all the creatures live. I finally, after weeks of having various problems with my camera, managed to get some good pics.

This is my favorite shot
There was a huge octopus in the archway - I wasn't going anywhere near it to take pics - the arms were about 5cm thick. We also saw loads of pipefish, sandeels, shrimp, crabs of all kinds and even a tiny cuttlefish.
I'm not sure what this is - it was about 6-7cm long. Any ideas?

Really nice pictures, where was the Octopus ?
Inside the archway on the lefthand side (entering from the north I think). It was inside a crack about 1/2 way up the wall and quite along way in - to take any decent pics it would have to be disturbed. I was not quite up for westling a giant octopus (too many horror movies).

Fantastic photos shmeeg.
Great photos and congrats on the course completion. Any chance of doing a dive guide for the site. I regularly go to St. Abbs but have never done Eyemouth yet.
Excellent photos!
Where is the Cauldron?

Lucky you! :D :) :p
I'm mildly consoled that I spotted my first Yarrell's blenny at the Caves last week, but I'm desperate to get back to the east to hopefully see a wolfie &/or angler!
I have yet to even see a wolf fish and yours look like a real nice one - well done.

The Cauldron is just south of the 2nd point down from the harbour entrance. We did it as a boat dive and I'm not sure whether you could do it as a shore dive as it is adjacent to a golf course (there are alot of golf balls down there).
If you enter the water next to the wall, it goes straight down to 15m and approximately 20m SE is the entrance to the archway. This was my take on it anyway but I was taking more notice of the scenery than my compass bearing!

Thanks - I will make an attempt at the dive guide and send it off to Gord

Absolutley fab pics Shmeeg! Well done, you lucky lass! Could your "unknown" be a juvenile cod? Can I see a small barbel under the chin? or have I had too much Chardonnay?
:D
I think it could be - I,ve just found a picture in the "book" of a juvenile polar cod and it looks identical. That must be quite rare is it?

Hi Shmeeg, if you talk to fishermen they will tell you that cod are indeed getting scarce tho' not rare I'm afraid. Juveniles usually stay in the relative shallows till they grow bigger and are better able to defend themselves against other predators ( including their own kind). I have in the past netted loads of juvenile cod whilst fishing for smelt on the Tay, a small hazard for the little blighters when they get swept along with the tide. Oh, thanks for clearing up your other post in "training", I think Gord got kinda concerned there!
