View Full Version : St Abbs shore diving: Sun 15 July 2007
Charlie, Regthing, Stewart, Mogwai and any others how does this sound?
A midweek early evening dive at Dunbar Harbour (once the Bridge is in place) then a Sunday down at St Abbs for one boat one shore dive. I will speak to Peter Gibson on Sunday and find out what sunday he has free and how many he needs for it to be worth his while. I would suspect I will need approx 10 divers at £15 each, we could either do a morning shore then an afternoon boat or the other way round. Can I have some numbers and some dates for July?
Sunday 15th or 22nd I can do, midweek would be a wednesday or Thursday.
Once I have some numbers and have spoken to the skipper I will start a new thread for the St Abbs one.
C'mon then?
Hi Chris,
not a problem for me provided i am not on a 12-8 or 10-6 shift which i dont work to often. Work in Sighthill so as long as i can get along the bypass or through Edinburgh should be ok for 6pm if leaving at 5pm latest, 6.30pm at Dunbar would give even more time to contend with the demon traffic LOL. Work occassionally at the weekend as well but with bit of notice can swap shifts and manage a Sunday at St Abbs if on. More diving the merrier, not getting out at the moment as struggling for a buddy and desperate to get in the water as much as possible.
Cheers
M.
Hi Chris
Mid week is fine for me after 9th July.
St Abbs, I'm good for either the 15th or 22nd.
Sounds good. :)
My current availability:
Evenings in July: all except 11th, 25th, 26th
Weekends in July: all except 1st, 21st
The sooner that we can pencil in dates the better before other things come up.
Thanks again for taking the initiative, chris. This is becoming a habit!
lets get the 15th July in our diaries then for st abbs and I will speak to the skipper on Sunday.
Midweek we can arrange something nearer the time
im booked with aquastars on the 15th July at Eyemouth. :(

Spoke to the skipper and he has no places available during July at weekends, so thoughts are for a couple of shore dives, you lot still up for that, if so lets start another thread more appropriately located and named.
We could do Big Green Carr one dive and try for Cathederal the other??
going to try and find out this week, then hopefully dive the next week!!
Am fine for the 15th, working thSaturday so have Sunday off, bring on the wet stuff :)

15th at St Abbs sound good. A boat dive would have been good, but a couple of shore dives sound nice. Never dived this site so it will be nice to see somewhere new.
So what time is everybody meeting?
/Colin :D
Wonder if one of the admin type people could move the St Abbs on the 15th posts to a new thread. I will check tides, but I would suggest no matter we get down there early, i.e. before 10am to get parking.
Mogwai, we can meet somwhere to share cars if you want, rather than take two.
Hi Chris,
by the looks of things airmonster and myself may be sharing but i know a man with a van :)

03:43 5.0m
09:56 0.8m
16:18 4.8m
22:12 1.2m
Based on Charlie's tides, may I suggest we meet about 09:00 to 09:30  so we can be kited up and in the water for low tide.
As I said, I've never dived this site, so someone with more experience here may want to suggest something more appropriate.
/Colin. :D
Low tide means falling/tripping/slipping over the rocks, however it does mean a relatively easy swim out to Cathedral with the tide helping to take us back to shore. This would then give us a "deeper" dive at Green Carr, and by deep I mean around 12-14m. The tides do look like spring tides so the they might be a bit fierce with a difference in 4m.
But I think if we meet for 0930 in the Harbour Masters car park that would be good.

Anyone bringing Barbecue material??
Copy and paste the above and alter as you see fit, first for the summer CA outings by the look of it!
A nice we description from another website
The best access to dive Cathedral Rock is from the southern side of the harbour wall where the wall joins a low, rocky reef. Directly opposite the entry point is another huge rock called Big Green Carr, which offers shelter, except in the most exceptional circumstances.
Once in the water, drop down to 6m on to the small sand-and-gravel patch smothered in hermit crabs, then swim over to the facing near-vertical wall. Follow it along, keeping it to your left, and travel on as far as you can go. Then cross over a small headland which juts out from the right, swim straight on to the next facing wall, which is part of Thistly Briggs, and by keeping the wall to your right you will come to Cathedral Rock. The average depth is 8 -14m.
The tides do look like spring tides so the they might be a bit fierce with a difference in 4m.
You're spot on, chris. Spring tide is on Sat 14th.
But I think if we meet for 0930 in the Harbour Masters car park that would be good.

Am pretty sure parking is about £10 for the day folks, bring plenty of change cause there isn't anywhere to get it close by.
M.
Currently I am back at work on the 15th, although I am trying to get another week off!
Parking within the Harbour trust car park is £5 for the day, although limited spaces. The cooncil car park is £10 for the day. The other option if there are quite a few of us is one or two cars park in the harbour car park and the rest dump their kit with them, then park at the top of the hill for free, did that during busy weekends before.
I reckon it may be possible to squeeze in 3 dives if we are meeting up at 0930 and have a minimal amount of faffing about between dives. You can get fills within the harbour for those with limited supply of tanks and there are now plenty of cafe's for grub, although I will be bringing my own. Barbecue is also an option, although dont barbecue anything you caught while diving or expect a large fine (I think).
Roll on the 15th, hope you can wangle the week of T2T!!
I'd be up for the 15th as will need to rinse the fresh water from the 14th off my kit after hopefully a few practice dives (ready for fingers crossed my implant being fitted end of this month ;) ) or should that be the other way round, if anyone from this side wants to share cars or picking up on way through let me know.
Are we all confirmed for Sunday then. I may be holidaying at Dunbar and might be looking for someone to pick me up on route, although wife might not be talking to me by the end of the week so the holiday might not happen, DIVING definately will happen, unless weather is really crap.
Presumably we can share contact details through PM's
Yup, defo confirmed for the 15th.
I'm still up for it. :)
Chris (or anyone else), I'm probably travelling alone so could offer a lift.
Hi Guys.
I think I'll need to pull out. Just back from a camping holiday with the guys and I have a bathroom to finish amongst other things. I'm going to be a good boy and not go diving both Sat and Sunday.
I still fancy an evening get together on the East coast next week if anyone can manage.
Scott.
That's a shame Scott, but completely understandable. My wife is away this week so my current motto is "dive dive dive" but usually a little bit of moderation has to creep in.
Hopefully catch you at a site before too long...
Looks like Dan is probably joining us. For those of you that dont know Dan, he posts on SD and has made a couple of umbilical torches, Dan and I usually test these out on dives and they are pretty good and cheap to make!!
Hopefully I can convince him to bring some swedish meatballs (he is swedish, so no guesses what type of regs he uses!)
Looking forward to it and hope the weather is good to us :)
Thought I better add:
Dont park in the same place on sunday as you are doing thursday night or it will cost you £10 for the privelage, go right round the car park to the far left and into the harbour master area, rather than the cooncil car park.
I can't wait for this week's east diving :D
all of those wolffish had better brush their teeth in readiness for my camera's appearance  :o

Awrite lads...
I was thinking of going to the east coast this weekend maself seeing as the golf is on at Loch Lomond I reckon the traffic up that way will be mental.
Does anyone go through Glasgow and maybe want to meet up to share the fuel costs -either in my car or yours???
I would be well up for St Abbs (maybe someone can show me how to get to Cathedral Rock!!!) although initially I was thinking Eyemouth Weasel Loch.
Either way it would be good to meet up with a few of you.
Get a bit bored with all that solo-diving now and again:D

Barry.
Barry, I am central and Dan is coming through to me to take my car through, I think Mogwai and Airmonster are sharing travel and Charlie is stirling.
You are more than welcome to join us, the intentions so far are to do Cathedral and probably Big Green Carr, unless Cathedral is that good we want to do it twice.
I was even thinking it might be worth heading into Dunbar on the way home and see if the bridge is in yet, if it is we could use up the air in our tanks bimbling round the harbour wall :D

Nae problem mate.
I might still meet up with y'all yet
Ive asked a few of the guys I dive with if they are up for coming eastside for a change so see what happens.
Regarding diving Dunbar. Ive dived the Harbour,Johnstones Hole and The Yetts from shore before. The last two being cracking dives though a bit hairy with the tides an all. You certainly wouldnt want to do them on a big spring tide such as this weekend:eek:
However Ive done a bit of diving at The Bathe Reef behind the Bayswater Hotel and it was fanastic especially on the seaward side of the reef up the channel known as The Coral Canyon.
I keep meaning to go back and do some more solo exploring round the Bathe as its that big it takes afew dive to check it allout.
And the lobsters were great :D
Absolutely minted diving.
You might want to bear that in mind if that poxy bridge is still beefed....
Hopefully see a few of ye round about on Sunday.
I know what you mean about doing the Yetts from shore with a tide, I was cream crackered the last time I tried!
Johnstones hole from the leap of faith harbour wall and returning up pebble beach is easy though!
I went to Dunbar Harbour last night to check out the bridge on the way to St Abbs as I was a bit early.
The bridge components were sitting quite forlornly on the quayside so I doubt they'll be in place before Sunday :o
Thanks Charlie,
Thats a bugger, I want to do the jump again :(
No diving for me this Sunday:mad:
Hi,
does everyone have contact numbers for each other in case of a call off? Thought just crossed my mind as i am in work 3 stories up and it is blowing like hell at the moment. Hoping it is calmer for tomorrow, seems to be blowing from the west at the moment though.
I have a few, however weather report still looks good for tomorrow, see you all there for 0930
It's flat calm in St Abbs Harbour now :D
webcam (http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/webplay/webcams/stabbs.shtml)
High Tide at 4pm so were going down for that, what about you guys ?
we're meeting at 0930
slack water is shortly after that which would be the best time for us to do CR IMHO
circumnavigating Big Green Carr would seem like a plan for our 2nd dive (chris can show me the wolfie)
the wind is predicted to swing round to an easterly in the afternoon
not sure if this will have any impact on the swell & viz
spot on charlie! bcr can be done in almost any conditions
Might see you down there then if your still about at 4pm
