Bit of a nightmare for me at the weekend. For the second time in 6 years of diving I had a cold on a dive trip: blocked ears, sore sinuses, and buckets of yellow snot.

This time it was the Farne islands, and I spent the whole 3-day trip helping people get in and out of the water: fin gimp!

When my sinuses get blocked in this way, there is no point in trying to get below 3m. The pain is just too much and my ears threaten to implode.

Has anyone else lost expensive trip-days due to snot?

I feel for you :(

Its really crap when you dont get to dive - especially when its your own trip.

Ive not got to dive on one of my trips before (May Island) although that was due to my equipment (1st stage exploding inside! All the o-rings anyway) rather than a cold.

I wish you the bestest of dives for the rest of the year!:)

never because of a cold, but i have went diving twice in two weeks running only to turn up at the dive site with no air!
eventually figured it out, it was the way i handled my twins into the car boot, i accidentally, but only very slightly opened the valve!
now i have developed a compulsive disorder for checking valves.

Similar experience to Gord, (well and truly snotted) due to go on a long dive weekend to Islay.
Cold set in on the Friday used decongestants which seemed to ease it and thought I had it licked!!!.
Ascending after the first dive, got the most terrible pain in my sinuses & they were starting to make an horrible whilsting noise, stopped the ascent pain eased off a little. Slow ascent to the surface ended up with a blinding headache, blood snot in mask . Sinus headache persisted over next few days weekend ruined headache warned off with pain killers.

Back home ended up going to the docs, diagnosed with sinus infection no diving till it cleared. Not an experience I want to go through again and it was my own fault pushing things.:(

One year later, same thing! Either the month of May is cursed for me or else it's something to do with having kids at primary school where they clearly manufacture biological weapons. Another weekend written off by a heavy cold instead of diving in the SOM which I'd paid to do. V depressing. :(

naw ... left early saturday. The prospect of hanging around was too depressing. Did have a great night out in Oban though - at least that's something. And managed to make some progress with this project today. But too much "virtual diving" for my liking. I just can't believe the power of Sod's Law sometimes. Especially around the spring bank holiday: 2001 SOM, 2006 Farnes, 2007 SOM: bolloxed by bloody headcolds.

Ah well ...

I will cross my fingers as I say this, but I rarely ever get colds. I take vitamin C every day, sometimes not so much in summer. Some believe it is a myth but it seems to work for me.I dont have my central heating on too high either and I always have my windows open, though just a bit in winter. Sorry about your holiday Gordon. that is really crap.

What does that mean?

fin gimp: one who serves no purpose on the dive boat other than to help divers off with their fins while they enthuse about how fabulous the dive was.

I woke up on Saturday morning and he was gone....just a scrawled note and a cheque left in his place. By the way Gord, the skipper of the Gaelic (or Garlic as Alex called it after a few drinks) is after your blood.....apparently you woke up his entire boat dragging your kit across his deck at 6am.

Anyway, you missed some good diving - Hispania twice, Rondo, Breda, Calve island wall and Morven penninsula.

I was in Gozo last year and decided to work through the minor pain barrier due to blocked ears on a dive that involved surfacing in a cave. The resulting anguish at not being able to decend to get back out of the cave was a minor worry and one I care not to repeat. It also meant I couldn't dive the next day which was on the one and only wreck dive we had planned on the whole trip.

I did have a flatmate once that used to dive regularly whilst having a cold. Never kept in touch with him though... he's probably had a few ear traumas by now.

Not had to call off yet, but got close. Went on long planned trip to Scapa with cold not going. Went down to 10m ears a bit sore, went back up and tried again, flood of snot down my throat and fine for the 4 days afterwards. Not the smartest plan, but.........

(Don't let Phil on SD read this!)

Otherwise noramlly pretty good at calling off dives for colds, man flu and the like!

you missed the part about emptying the snot every morning into your collection of, what was 18 hankies for 4 days and also the amount of snot on your face when you took your mask off. It kept me amused and still makes me chuckle! You going to be doing same at SoM?

Yeah, this can't be a cold or I'd be over it already. I should go and see the doctor (how long have I been saying that for now?). I've tried all sorts of nasal sprays, losenges and the like. At least the worst of the sinus headaches and sore throat are past.
