My wife lost her back up torch @ Carrick Castle, Loch Goil yesterday.

It was a yellow (Lidl) LED 4AA torch attached to a retractor lanyard (probably worth more than the torch!)
look on the bright side, it wasnt the new frogman.

look on the bright side, it wasnt the new frogman. But that's only because both of our Frogmen were sent back to the shop with faults. That's 3 that I've sent back now.

Received 2 new replacement ones in the post this morning. Annoying about the retractor lanyard though as I just bought it on eBay a couple of weeks ago.

No. 2 (mine) - survived a couple of night dives. After its 3rd dive, the metal sleeve became separated from the underlying plastic bezel. It still worked but looked pretty shoddy with the adhesive-coated threaded plastic bezel left exposed.

No. 3 (Sarah's: which was a replacement for the one that arrived switched on & melted :() - flooded on its first dive without being taken from her BCD pocket (at least she didn't lose it ).

Got to hand it to 7dayshop as far a customer care goes though: no quibble replacement policy works efficiently including reimbursement of my postage.

Just hope that these torches & the unit that one of our club members bought after my recommendation survive a bit longer!

Think I will stick with my UK40, found in the water near the Port Napier, in working order, even though covered in barnacles, and still going strong four years later:)

Yeah, I'll reserve judgement until I see how these replacement ones perform. As you say, the light beam is impressive, but not if it has flooded.

I know that stewart has had one for a while that he admires. Maybe I've just been unlucky. In general though, I don't really like torches that you activate by turning the bezel. Always feel that there's a danger of over/under-tightening them. I think that I maybe overtightened ours which might have made the o-ring in my wife's one not be seated correctly. What I'm going to try now is tightening it until the light just goes out & then see how it goes.

At least the Frogman is activated by loosening the bezel. I really hate torches that are activated by screwing the bezel down. You never can tell if it's sufficiently tight to avoid leaking when you start the dive and they tend to get turned on by the pressure effects at depth (fnaar fnaar ).

third time lucky charlie
not sure if you have ever seen one turned on, but when you do, you will be pleased you invested in a frogman.

i bought the new wee baby frogman on sunday, it arrived today.
took it out the box, turned it on, blinded myself:eek:
would recon its about 2/3's as good as the daddy frogman.
has a tripple LED set of bulbs but not a directional beam.
i only bought it as the bulb in the bathroom is on the blink!;)
right, im off for a shower.

Hope that you have fun with your new wee toy: how does it compare sizewise with the Frogman?

i have never been one who thinks that size matters, when it comes to torches.
i think the power is more important.
however i think its well sized as it fits very snug in the palm of your hand.
perhaps an inch smaller than the larger one & activated in the same way by slowly turning the head a few times.

Funny you should mention all this. Gas Guzzler's first Frogman also flooded on its first dive, without being taken out of his BCD pocket. It was the same dive that he flooded his brand new light cannon on - the light cannon apparently survived being flooded, after being gently taken aprt, hair dryered and put back together, however 2 weeks later wouldn't work.

On taking apart the battery, it had completely corroded - obviously over time the salt water had worked its worst - another £75 to get a new one.

Anyway, 7dayshop replaced the frogman and sent another - this one arrived, like Charlie's, switched on. Thankfully it hadn't melted and with a new set of batteries appears ok. I can't be bothered with the hassle of sending it back just for a new set of batteries.

There would apparently be a problem with these torches though - does anyone think these might be a batch of seconds or something? I see Aquatron are selling them at £40 - might be worth checking out if they have had any returned. If not, then they could be a seconds batch.

I was wondering that myself, Claire. It's slightly strange that 7dayshop.com are selling the yellow version of the torch for £29.99 & the black one for £17.99 considering that they're of identical specifications apart from the colour of the case. Maybe the deal is too good to be true after all. At least they've been efficient with their returns policy so far, but I wonder what will happen if the torch fails after a couple of months?

My frogman is working perfectly and last sunday it was used to 47m and for 2 hours. My torch seems to work well but marions stainless seperated from the plastic so i will stick a blob of glue on the threads. ;)
