There is the possibility that some of us go to Hodges on the 21st/22nd of July and do a dive there and then we also arrange to meet at Fife Ness for a Dive on the 1st July. The tides for Fife Ness would make it an afternoon dive so it's not ridiculously early in any case. Fife Ness could be done in a day though while I get the impression Hodges would need tents and crates of beer.

There seems to be a few wanting to go to Hodges on the 21st/22nd. I'll kick off a new thread for those wanting to go on that trip...

The rest of you aren't invited :p

I voted neither as I will be on holiday on the July dates that were suggested earlier. However fine for some of June and okay for August if dates change.

August definitely better - mid to late August better still. Can go anywhere!
How about the Puffin rib? I know it's expensive, but you get out into the sound and the ride is fun ... we could do it mid-week: take a day off work. Might be good??

I can do August too... how about we stick with Hodges on the July dates (see other post) and then do Puffin's RIB in August?

Cos lets face it... we're not all going to be able to find one weekend and one location that will suit all so for all introductions we'll have to mingle between dates and divesites and this will take at least a couple of planned weekends.

charlie
06-06-07, 12:02
absolutely: good plan, DS! :D

Gord
06-06-07, 12:52
you mean ... dive more than once during the summer?! :p

I think I can maybe manage that ... although my track record so far this year ain't so hot :o

Looking out the window today I'm thinking, ... blue water ... light breeze ... warm sun ... rolling off a rib in the sound into bright, clear viz ...

OK - Puffin rib in August! Let's set a date. I'm moving house on the 24th so after that is difficult for me, so I propose Wednesday 8th! Midweek is good up there because it's quiet. We can get the rib to ourselves and persuade them to give us 2 wrecks rather than the usual wreck + scenic. I think the price is £38. I know it's steep - but you're paying for the convenience and the awesome rib ride too.

It's in my diary!

Awww.. Gord... that's too close to the previous weekend. Can we make it the next wednesday? Me and almost the entire Cupar lot will be in the Summer Isles from the 2nd to the 6th so the wednesday you're proposing will be a bit tight.

Oh... and thursdays are easier for skiving work.

Lars
06-06-07, 13:50
Midweek!! Yeah... Another excuse to skip work. Not a problem for me anyway :p

the 8th is not too bad because I can come down directly from the summer isles (see above) :D

the following week is not bad either, because I'll have some babysitters at hand

If we meet on thursday, we can even have a looooooong weekend of diving

p.s. I am so glad that my missus is not on CA, otherwise I would be dead! Hey Cupar bunch! Don't tell her.....

42 quid for two dives from a rib....

Whats even worse is, if you get tangled in their ridicously long shot on the Breda you then sack the 2nd dive cos you're still in shock...so 42 quid for a very short dive is rather expensive!
And the rib had 10 divers on it and was *far* too cramped.....

Am sure other folk have had better experiences with Puffin than i did!!:) But Aug would be better form me as struggling for a weekend after the beg of July T on the P & work):(

Better to get a mate with a rib to take you out, shot the wreck "properly", have a fantastic dive with a fly thro', and charge you nothing! Oh, and take you places you've never been, and get your confidence back :D
Know anyone ?

PeterM

The RIBs do look good - Dive Safari in their previous incarnation used to run a fast RIB out of N Berwick and the ride itself was worth the money - weeeeeeeeee

How deep is the Breda. We only topped out at 20m and that was only at the stern and when we dropped over the bow for a look, the rest of the time was spent on deck. It was bouyed when we arrived, did they just try and set their own line and miss?

We dived off the Gannet and had a good day out, don't think it was £42 although that was a few years ago. There is only one Ganett as opposed to 2 RIBs though.:)

August works for me, so my vote may now be wrong, and Oban would be fun. Although my holidays are dead so no midweek trip for me - ho hum.

puffin charge £42 & advertise it, its no secret.
£42 x 10 divers = £420, an average hard boat (with a lift) will set you back between £300-£350 & it will take 12 divers = £25-£29 a head.
puffin rhibs cost over 140k a piece & burn mega fuel, so you have to pay for that.
it is fantastic being on them on a nice warm calm day.
its not so nice in choppy water during winter.
look at the boat pic & look at the boat size verses the space allocated to divers.
some of the rhibs run almost empty during the week, but are almost always full at weekends.
make up your own mind, if its not value for money, then dont use them.

p.s. last time i was on one of their boats, we had a bottle nose dolphin riding the bow wave. could have almost touched it.
first & only time i have seen one in scottish waters.

That's a great idea. Who has a RIB tho....
Must be a nice guy, with a RIB, would be good if he dives too. Should put up an ad in the Fife Herald. Or maybe ask in the pubs in Newburgh

I do know someone with a rib and he might take us up there. However no fast ride from the last motor I saw on it and probably just manage, maybe, 6 divers in any degree of comfort.
