does anyone know of any decent shore dives of the Ayrshire coast.. around Girvan would be ideal!!!
we are going there for the summer solstice, and will hopefully be diving Ailsa Craig. But if the weather's ruff we need alternatives..
Any help would be greatly appreciated..
cheers..
I looked through some old logbooks from the late 70's-early 80's and came across some sites that were not deep but offered some interesting diving.
There is wreckage of the 'Varaig', I believe it was a Russian cruiser which is in Lendalfoot Bay and well broken up. I marked this one as very interesting.
Bennane Head. Did not write details on this one!
Brest Rocks, a rocky reef found in 12-15 metres probably about 500m offshore. launched from Turnberry. We found this on the 3rd attempt.:o
There is supposed to be wreckage in Ballantrae, though never dived there.

My buddy and I shore dived the south - Aaarrggghhh - and north bays of the Turnberry lighthouse last night. Crap first dive being scraped at 2m by surge then washed out by breakers. Hypnotic second dive through a kelp forest. Trip report on YD if you're interested. I would dive the north bay again but if its too rough to dive Ailsa Craig then I expect it would be too rough at the Lighthouse. It's very shallow for a long way out so there would be big breakers/surge because of the fetch.

Had a look in Ridleys Book Dive West Scotland Vol 1.
Most of the sites he lists on this stretch are only geared up for boat access the few that specifically mention being shore dives are
Dunure NS251199 Shallow shore dive less than 10m
Meikle Craigs Ayr Bay NS277289 Shore dive max depth 20m a long snorkel.:)
